Organic farming statistics 2024: United Kingdom

This release presents final estimates of the land area farmed organically, crop areas, livestock numbers and numbers of organic producers and processors in the UK for 2024. A detailed breakdown of organic farming in England is available here. The results are produced from data compiled by approved organic certification bodies. The total organic area referred to is made up of fully organic land and organic land in-conversion.

Key findings for the UK

In 2024:

  • 503 thousand hectares were farmed organically in the UK.
  • 59% of UK organic land was in England, 26% in Scotland, 14% in Wales and 1.4% in Northern Ireland.

Nearly 10,000ha are organic vegetables (including potatoes), 2000ha are organic fruit and nut production and 600ha are herbaceous & ornamentals.

Veg and potatoes accounts for approx 10% of total organic area, Fruit & nuts approx 7% and Ornamental approx 6%.

From 2023 to 2024, organic veg production is 4% down, fruit 0.5% down but ornamentals are 25% up.

There are approx 5000 organic operators (all growers and processors / all products) in the UK in 2024. This is down from a peak of nearly 6500 operators in 2017. The number of operators in the UK has reduced by 2% since 2023.
