The UKHSA have published data related to Shiga toxin E. Coli for 2024.
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), also known as Vero cytotoxin-producing Escherichia coli (VTEC), are bacteria that can cause gastroenteritis. The main reservoir for STEC is cattle, although it is also carried by other ruminants such as sheep, goats and deer. Transmission can occur through direct or indirect contact with animals or their faeces, consumption of contaminated food or water, and person-to-person spread.
Beef, fresh fruit and salad have all been implicated in outbreaks in recent years. Cases have increased by 26.1% from 2023 and there were 5 outbreaks investigated by the UKHSA in 2024.
Cases are distinguished as being O157 and non-O157, with O26, O145 and O103 commonly reported in the non-O157 group. Full details can be found here: Shiga toxin-producing E Coli (STEC) data 2024 published
