Introduction of PHEATS for Ware potatoes

Introduction of PHEATS for Ware potatoes

9 Oct 2024

Ware potato exporters can now use the Plant Health Exports Audited Trader Scheme (PHEATS) to help with their exports.

PHEATS is a trade facilitation scheme for the exports of fruit, vegetables and cut flowers to the European Union (EU) and Northern Ireland (NI).

Businesses preparing ware potatoes for export can apply for authorisation if they have the right facilities, equipment, and trained staff. This includes completing online training, an assessment, and a site audit.

What does this mean for exporters?

  • PHEATS authorisation is specific to each location.
  • Exporters using multiple suppliers must ensure each supplier is authorised.
  • Staff at a location authorised for PHEATS for ware potatoes must complete online training on PHEATS, as well as specific training and assessment on ware potato pests, diseases, and inspection methods.
  • Existing PHEATS-authorised traders with suitable facilities can extend their authorisation to include ware potatoes if their staff complete this additional training.
  • Merchants without their own packing station cannot get PHEATS authorisation, and staff cannot inspect at different locations.
