On 5 January 2026, the French authorities announced an immediate suspension on the import of foodstuffs from countries outside the European Union that contain residues of plant protection products (PPPs) prohibited for use within the EU.
The ban applies to specific commodities listed in the official annex and targets the following active substances: Carbendazim, Benomyl, Glufosinate, Thiophanate-methyl, and Mancozeb.
This precautionary measure aims to protect consumer health and ensure compliance with EU food safety standards. It prohibits the import, introduction, and placing on the French market—whether free of charge or for sale—of foodstuffs containing quantifiable residues of these substances.
The Order comes into effect the day after publication and will remain in force until the European Commission adopts appropriate measures or, failing that, for one year.
Foodstuffs acquired by importers within one month of the Order’s entry into force are exempt.
Food business operators are required to take reasonable steps to ensure compliance, including verifying product origins, assessing treatment history, and conducting residue analyses where necessary.
