Gene Editing Statutory Instrument voted through

16 Mar 2022

House of Lords voted through the Government’s proposed Statutory Instrument to reduce restrictions on field trial research of gene edited crops. This follows a vote in the Commons last week which passed it by 305 votes to 2 against.

By making it easier to conduct field trials, this marks a small but important step towards freeing up genetic innovation in England – and a milestone on the path to more proportionate, science-based regulation.
