Consultation on Tariff quota for Chinese Garlic - open to 16/12/22

28 Oct 2022

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) invites your views on the administration of the Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ) for garlic imported from China. This consultation is being carried out by Defra and will be open from 21st October 2022 to 16th December 2022.

The objective of this consultation is to gather views on the best way to administer the garlic TRQ in the future. We are seeking your views on five possible options and are interested in any alternative proposals and supporting evidence you can provide.

The quota for garlic imported from China is managed by a license system as demand usually outstrips supply. The way the licenses are administered can affect who qualifies for a share of quota and how much they are allocated. It can also influence how easy it is for new applicants to obtain a share of quota.

This consultation is open to anyone with an interest to provide comments. It is particularly relevant to those who import garlic into the UK or are interested in importing garlic.
