Migration Advisory Committee publishes interim report

29 March 2018

In July 2017, the Home Secretary commissioned the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to assess the impact on the UK labour market of the UK’s exit from the EU and how the UK’s immigration system should be aligned with a modern industrial strategy. This is to provide the evidence base for UK migration after the implementation period in 2021.

From 4 August to 27 October 2017, the MAC held a call for evidence as well as meeting many stakeholders. Details of stakeholders the MAC met and also which bodies submitted evidence are contained in the annexes to the interim update.

The Committee stresses that this is very much an interim report and should not be used to pre-judge what its final conclusions may be.  The Committee commented: “We did not feel the MAC should be absent from this discussion for the 15 months from commission to final report.”

The MAC’s interim update sets out a summary of the views expressed by employers and of the regional issues raised. These themes seem the best way of summarising the views expressed to us but should not be taken to imply that the MAC endorses a sectoral and/or regional approach to post-Brexit migration policy.

As well as the interim update, the MAC is publishing on its website all the written evidence it received from stakeholders, with the exception of a handful of bodies who asked for their evidence to be confidential.

FPC gave evidence to the consultation and is also working with other UK food and drink trade associations to lobby the Home Office on the development of a future migration policy and system.
