UK pesticide residues in food monitoring programme

22 June 2018

The Pesticides Residues in Food Expert Committee has published the findings of its recent sampling for January to April 2018 as part of the rolling reports for beans with pods, grapes, okra and potatoes.

Beans with Pods

·         1 sample from Kenya contained a residue of profenofos 0.1 mg/kg (MRL=0.01*).

·         1 sample from Bangladesh contained residues of dimethoate (sum) 0.07 mg/kg (MRL=0.02*), fenpropathrin 0.03 mg/kg (MRL=0.01*) and quinalphos 0.02 (MRL= 0.01*).

·         1 sample from Bangladesh contained residues of carbendazim (sum) 1.3 mg/kg (MRL=0.2) and fenpropathrin 0.08 mg/kg (MRL=0.01*).

·         1 sample from Kenya contained residues of lambda-cyhalothrin 0.4 mg/kg (MRL=0.2) and profenofos 0.3 mg/kg (MRL=0.01*).

·         1 sample from Mexico contained a residue of folpet (sum) 0.06 mg/kg (MRL=0.03*).

·         1 sample from Bangladesh contained residues of abamectin (sum) 0.04 mg/kg (MRL=0.03), dimethoate (sum) 0.06 mg/kg (MRL=0.01*) and fenvalerate (sum) 0.2 mg/kg (MRL=0.01).

·         1 sample from Egypt contained a residue of propargite 0.08 mg/kg (MRL=0.01*).

·         1 sample from Malaysia contained a residue of dimethoate (sum) 0.06 mg/kg (MRL=0.01*).

The risk assessment screens for each of the above identified that none of the residues detected by the laboratory would be expected to have an effect on health.

Grapes

·         1 sample from Chile contained a residue of captan (sum) 0.05 mg/kg (MRL=0.03*). The risk assessment screen identified that none of the residues detected by the laboratory would be expected to have an effect on health.

Okra

·         1 sample from India contained a residue of diafenthiuron 0.02 mg/kg (MRL=0.01*).

·         1 sample from Honduras contained residues of chlorfenapyr 0.03 mg/kg (MRL=0.01*) and oxamyl 0.07 mg/kg (MRL=0.01*).

·         1 sample from India contained a residue of flonicamid (sum) 0.05 mg/kg (MRL=0.03*).

·         1 sample from India contained a residue of flonicamid (sum) 0.2 mg/kg (MRL=0.03*).

The risk assessment screens on each of the above identified that none of the residues detected by the laboratory would be expected to have an effect on health.

Potatoes

·         2 samples from the UK that contained residues of chlorpropham at 3.7 mg/kg ad 4.3 m/kg (MRL = 10 mg/kg) require further consideration but an effect on health is unlikely.
