Industry trailblazers celebrate at 2018 FreshAwards

The UK fresh produce industry enjoyed a spectacular evening as it celebrated the outstanding achievements of individuals and businesses at the 2018 FreshAwards. 

All FreshAwards winners and finalists are trailblazers for the industry, setting a high standard of excellence,” commented Nigel Jenney, Chief Executive of the Fresh Produce Consortium. “The Fresh Awards are the ultimate accolade from the UK fresh produce industry. We’re delighted to recognise strong leadership, innovation and business acumen among this year’s finalists and winners.

Around five hundred people attended the gala evening which was hosted by Shane Richie, popular TV actor and presenter, at the Pavilion at the Tower of London on Tuesday 5 June 2018.

Guests enjoyed a fabulous summer party, including Pimms reception on the lawn and entertainment from the British Imperial Military Band.

On the night the highest accolades were awarded to:

Aldi – Fresh Produce Business of the Year, sponsored by Polymer Logistics

“We applaud Aldi for its long-term commitment in the fresh produce sector, and for its strong focus on working in partnership with suppliers.”


Laurence Olins, formerly Chairman of the Poupart Group – Lifetime Achievement Award, sponsored by Greencell

“Thanks to his dedication and passion Laurence has had a colossal impact over fifty years in our industry, and he leaves an inspirational legacy for future generations.”


The winners of the individual 2018 FreshAwards are:

Individual Excellence

  • Freddie Heathcote of Arnott & Mason – Young Person of the Year, sponsored by Pooling Partners: “Congratulations to Freddie for giving the wow factor with plants for stores, offices and individuals. His lateral thinking and grit to succeed is inspirational.”
  • Alison Martin of Greenyard Fresh UK – Manager of the Year, sponsored by Total Produce: “Congratulations to Alison who has a rare and winning combination of commercial and technical acumen.”

Supply Chain Excellence

  • GT Produce – Wholesale Supplier of the Year, sponsored by New Spitalfields Market: “GT Produce had a clear customer strategy and was prepared to re-work the traditional market processes to enhance overall customer experience and maintain competitiveness.”
  • Polymer Logistics – Business Service Partner, sponsored by APH: “The Cleanpal innovation uses modern technology to ensure that transit packaging provides more benefits for the produce industry, our customers and the environment.”
  • Flamingo – Floral Supplier of the Year, sponsored by Smurfit Kappa: “This integrated, highly focused business delivers high standards in the supply of cut flowers and plants.”
  • SH Pratt Group – Foodservice Supplier of the Year, sponsored by PML: “By adapting to market needs and using retail supply expertise, SH Pratt Group has met the complex needs of a multi-faceted small supply chain.”
  • Blue Skies – Supermarket Supplier of the Year, sponsored by PML: “Congratulations to Blue Skies for responding well to tough market conditions, demonstrating its ability to diversify and adapt to change.”

Retail Excellence

  • Keelham Farm Shop, Yorkshire – Independent Retailer of the Year, sponsored by CHEP: “Not just a shop, Keelham is a fabulous food and eating experience.”

Consumers and industry voted online during January to April 2018 for the winners of the Convenience Retailer, Multiple Retailer and Multiple Floral Retailer awards.

  • M&S Simply Foods – Convenience Retailer of the Year, sponsored by CHEP. Customers’ comments: “Best quality.”
  • Aldi – Multiple Retailer of the Year, sponsored by IFCO. Customers’ comments: “Consistently fresh, with plenty of Super 6 offers.”
  • Aldi –Multiple Floral Retailer of the Year, sponsored by Zyon UK. Customers’ comments: “Unbeatable prices for beautiful long-lasting flowers.”


Business Excellence

  • Aldi – Marketing Campaign of the Year, sponsored by Morgan Cargo: “This campaign achieved fantastic coverage and buy-in, harnessing Olympic athletes to inspire young people.”
  • G’s Fresh Mushrooms – CSR Excellence, sponsored by Greenyard Fresh UK: “G’s pioneering work makes a strong environmental statement whilst improving its product and reducing waste.
  • British Cherry Growers – Innovation of the Year, sponsored by Fowler Welch: “This is a good message for the industry, showing how collaboration works and encouraging exports of British produce.”
  • Blue Skies –Best Place to Work, sponsored by Freeths: “Blue Skies sets the standard with its strong culture of respect for others and confident belief in their capabilities.”
