Conditions for imports of citrus for processing

9 January 2018

The European Commission has issued Implementing Decision (EU) 2017/2374, setting out conditions for movement, storage and processing of certain fruits and hybrids originating in third countries to prevent the introduction into the Union of certain harmful organisms.

The new regulation is specifying the conditions for citrus destined for processing with regard to citrus black spot. See the full legal act here.

After many years of lobbying, FPC secured a derogation for requirements for processing citrus from South Africa, Brazil and Uruguay, all subject to emergency measures.  The decision set a precedent that alternative requirements for fruit for processing are justified under controlled conditions.  We are pleased that these measures are now encapsulated in the above regulation and avaialble to other third countries.
