EU-Canada deal provisionally implemented

19 September 2017

The European Commission has published Official Journal L238/9 confirming that CETA is to be provisionally implemented from 21 September 2017.

From this date provided all of the required conditions are met the preferential rates may be claimed for qualifying goods exported from the EU to Canada or vice versa.

For tariff rates please check the EU TARIC or the UK Online Trade Tariff.

The provisional implementation includes the SPS chapter,  trade facilitation aspects of the agreement and tariff dismantling. Certain aspects will still need to be verified by the EU Member States’ national parliaments. This includes investment protection, investment market access for portfolio investment, the investment court system and the article on camcording.

Due  to the late confirmation of the entry into force date HMRC has published the CIP guidance without the usual review on the CETA agreement click here.
