Pesticide residues in food -latest UK findings

12 May 2017

The UK’s Pesticides Residues in Food Expert Committee has published the rolling reports for samples of beans with pods, grapes, okra, potatoes and prepared fresh fruit collected in January and February 2017.

Beans with Pods

  • 1 sample from Malaysia contained residues of chlorfenapyr 0.03 (MRL=0.01*), diafenthiuron 0.09 (MRL=0.01), dimethoate (sum) 0.06 (MRL=0.02*), dithiocarbamates 1.5 (MRL=1) and profenofos 0.03 (MRL=0.01*).
  • 1 sample from India contained residues of diafenthiuron 0.04 (MRL=0.01) and dimethoate (sum) 0.1 (MRL=0.02*).
  • 1 sample from India contained a residue of flusilazole 0.02 (MRL=0.01*).
  • 1 sample from Malaysia contained a residue of dimethoate (sum) 0.05 (MRL=0.02*).

The risk assessment screens for the above samples identified that none of the residues detected by the laboratory would be expected to have an effect on health.

  • 1 sample from Malaysia contained residues of amitraz 0.5 (MRL = 0.05*), diafenthiuron 0.05 (MRL=0.01), dimethoate (sum) 1.4 (MRL=0.02*), dithiocarbamates 1.1 (MRL=1) and lufenuron 0.05 (MRL = 0.02*). The risk assessment screen for dimethoate (sum) showed intakes above the ARfD for some consumers. A Rapid Alert (RASFF) notification has been submitted to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) about this finding. Further details will be published in the Quarter 1 2017 report.

Okra

  • 1 sample from India contained residues of acephate 0.02 (MRL=0.01*) and flonicamid (sum) 0.07 (MRL = 0.03*).
  • 1 sample from India contained a residue of flonicamid (sum) 0.06 (MRL = 0.03*).
  • 1 sample from Egypt contained a residue of chlorpropham (sum) 0.03 (MRL=0.01*).
  • 1 sample from Egypt contained a residue of chlorpropham (sum) 0.02 (MRL=0.01*).
  • 1 sample from India contained a residue of flonicamid (sum) 0.08 (MRL = 0.03*).
  • 1 sample from India contained a residue of flonicamid (sum) 0.07 (MRL = 0.03*).
  • 1 sample from China contained a residue of chlorfenapyr 0.02 (MRL=0.01*).
  • 1 sample from India contained a residue of tebuconazole 0.05 (MRL0.02*).

The risk assessment screens identified that none of the residues detected by the laboratory would be expected to have an effect on health.

Prepared Fresh Fruit

  • 2 samples from Ghana contained a residue of chlorate 0.1 (MRL = 0.01*). The risk assessment screen identified that none of the residues detected by the laboratory would be expected to have an effect on health.

For grapes and potatoes, none of the residues detected by the laboratory would be expected to have an effect on health.
