Greater security of vehicles needed says FPC

18 May 2016

At a recent meeting with the Immigration Minister FPC stressed that the UK fresh produce industry is continuing to suffer a high level of disruption to supplies of fresh produce.

Representatives from the haulage and insurance sectors as well as the UK food and drink industry met with the Minister the Rt Hon James Brokenshire to discuss the current situation.

“We support the Government’s intention to review and strengthen the current minimum standards required under the existing civil penalty regime but we believe that more needs to be done to ensure greater security of vehicles carrying fresh produce into the UK,” said Nigel Jenney, Chief Executive of FPC.

“Illegal migrants continue to board vehicles which leads to potentially contaminated consignments having to be destroyed. The Food Standards Agency has advised that it receives around 25-30 referrals a month, but we know this is only the tip of the iceberg.”

“The civil penalty scheme and the Accreditation Scheme should be used to identify, encourage and reward responsible hauliers. However, in the case of voluntary measures being insufficient to improve vehicle security we believe that the UK Government must consider putting in place stronger legislative measures,” added Nigel Jenney.

FPC has developed guidance (available to members online) and encourages members to identify and use responsible hauliers who are implementing security measures to protect their drivers and goods being carried.  We’re keen to hear from members with regard to what further action you would like to see and also for you to keep us informed of incidents affecting your products.
