The UK Government has shared with us a very brief outline of its proposed principles for border controls for imports coming into Great Britain from the EU from 1 January 2021, including customs and plant health controls. Imports to Northern Ireland are covered separately by the Northern Ireland Protocol and are not included in this announcement.
The UK Government confirmed that it will not be extending the transition period which ends on 31 December 2020 but recognises that industry is facing significant challenges currently due to Covid-19. Therefore it is announcing a three stage approach to placing controls at the GB border on EU imports from 1 January 2021.
FPC is pleased that the Government has recognised the concerns we have raised and we look forward to working more closely with the Government on the details.
